Several weeks ago I was chatting to Dave on the fruit and veg stall on Aylesbury market. He was telling me this is his 49th year of serving the people of Aylesbury with fresh fruit and vegetables. He is now in fact the longest serving market trader and probably one of the oldest too.

Our town market has seen many changes over the years including moving from the cobbles into the well of Friars Square and back again. I can remember as a child
seeing live animals in pens in one part of the ‘square’ with the stalls of produce, clothes, meat and fish in another. The stalls were arranged in long rows so you would walk up and down if you pushed your way through the crowd. Traffic would drive very slowly past the courthouse and up past the Green Man hostelry. It’s only about 1992 that the last bus ran through the ‘square’.

My husband David used to keep his loose change in a sock, he said it stopped his trouser pockets from getting holes. So Dave and his staff called him Mr Sock and
I became Mrs Sock. Whenever Dave gets new helpers he still introduces me as Mrs Sock!
