Early one Saturday morning as I was walking along the canal path on my way to the bus station I heard a loud splash but couldn’t see anything that would make that much noise. As I was about to cross the canal by the footbridge a man appeared holding a yellow rope with knots in it attached to a round magnet. He said he was metal fishing. Tell me more please I said.

Trevor told me metal fishing was a hobby of a group of people in Thame who wanted to make a difference to our local waterways. He showed me the Waitrose
shopping trolley and the other bits of metallic junk
dumped in the canal which he had fished out earlier. These included a car radio, headphones, a small
blowlamp, and several unidentifiable pieces of electrical equipment.

He also told me about the dumped ammunition he had helped recover. This included a live grenade, a clip of rifle bullets, and several artillery and mortar shells of various sizes.
